CURRICULUM · MODULE 2

Transparency

How to clearly disclose pricing, product details, break formats, and spot structures to collectors.

Core Module Est. 30 min read Required for Certification

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

What You'll Learn

  1. 1Understand why transparency is the cornerstone of collector trust in the breaking industry
  2. 2Disclose all pricing clearly and completely — before collectors commit to a purchase
  3. 3Present product details accurately so collectors know exactly what they are buying into
  4. 4Communicate break formats in unambiguous terms that any collector can understand
  5. 5Explain spot structures and randomization methods so the process is fully transparent

SECTION 1

Pricing Transparency

Collectors should never be surprised by a price. Every cost must be visible, understood, and agreed to before purchase.

  • Display the total price per spot, including all fees
  • Disclose shipping costs separately or bundled — but always clearly
  • State whether taxes are included or added at checkout
  • Never add surprise charges after a spot is purchased

SECTION 2

Product Details

Collectors deserve to know exactly what product they are buying into — with enough specificity to verify it themselves.

Product Identification

Identify every product in a break with enough specificity that collectors can verify what they are buying.

  • Use full product names including year, brand, and configuration (e.g., '2025 Topps Chrome Hobby - 1 Box')
  • Specify box or case type (Hobby, Retail, Blaster, Hanger, etc.)
  • Disclose whether product is from a fresh case or previously opened stock
  • Never use vague terms like 'high-end box' without specifics

Configuration & Contents

Collectors should know what a product contains — pack count, expected hits, and known odds — before buying a spot.

  • Disclose pack count per box and box count per case
  • Share manufacturer-published odds for key hits and parallels
  • Clarify what counts as a 'hit' in the context of the break
  • Note if products have been weighted, searched, or altered

Condition & Authenticity

Be honest about product condition and authenticity. Never represent altered or damaged goods as pristine.

  • Disclose any known damage to packs, boxes, or cases
  • Never sell resealed or tampered product as factory-sealed
  • Verify authenticity of high-value singles before sale
  • Document condition of cards before and after the break

Allocation & Replacement

Be transparent about how manufacturer allocations and replacement (hit-less) products are handled.

  • Disclose if a product is allocation-limited or hard to source
  • Explain what happens if promised product cannot be obtained
  • Communicate substitution policies before purchase if applicable
  • Never swap products without collector consent

SECTION 3

Break Formats

Every break format carries its own transparency obligations. Collectors must understand the format before they buy a spot.

Personal Breaks

A single collector purchases the entire product. Transparency means the collector knows exactly what they bought and what came out.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Confirm the exact product before opening
  • Stream or record the break for the buyer
  • Show all cards pulled — hits and base
  • Provide a written recap of notable pulls

Group Breaks (Random)

Multiple collectors buy spots and randomization determines which team or player each spot receives. The randomization process must be visible and verifiable.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Display the spot list and full participant list before randomization
  • Use a verifiable randomization tool (e.g., random.org) on stream
  • Show the randomization live and save the results
  • Never re-randomize or alter results after the draw

Group Breaks (Pick Your Spot)

Collectors choose their specific team or player. Transparency means all available and taken spots are visible in real time.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Maintain a live, visible spot board during sales
  • Mark sold spots immediately and accurately
  • Never sell the same spot to two collectors
  • Disclose any spots the breaker retains personally

Division / Tier Breaks

Spots are grouped by division, tier, or value range. Collectors must understand the grouping logic and what their spot covers.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Clearly define what each division or tier includes
  • Disclose how teams or players are assigned to tiers
  • Publish the full tier breakdown before spots go on sale
  • Never reassign tiers after purchases are made

Hit Draft / Pick

Spots are drafted in order after the break. Transparency means the draft order and selection process are fully visible.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Publish draft order before the break begins
  • Stream the draft live and confirm each pick
  • Save a record of the full draft results
  • Never alter draft order or skip a participant silently

Pack / Box Breaks

Collectors purchase individual packs or boxes from a case. Transparency means tracking what has been pulled and what remains.

Transparency Guidelines

  • Track which packs or boxes have been sold and opened
  • Disclose if the case is fresh or partially opened
  • Never mix loose packs from different cases without disclosure
  • Show the case and box breaks before opening

SECTION 4

Spot Structures

A spot is a collector's investment in your break. What it entitles them to must be defined clearly — and never changed after purchase.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Remember These Principles

  • Transparency is not optional — it is the foundation of collector trust and a core certification requirement
  • All-in pricing with no hidden fees must be the standard for every break you run
  • Product details must be specific enough for collectors to verify what they are buying
  • Break formats and spot structures must be explained before purchase, not after
  • Randomization must be live, verifiable, and never altered — the process is the product
  • When in doubt, disclose more rather than less — over-communication builds lasting trust
