Lack of Industry Standards

The Problem

The trading card industry has experienced explosive growth—but without a unified set of standards, that growth has come with increasing inconsistency, confusion, and risk.

Today, there is no universal framework governing how products are distributed, how breaks are conducted, how conditions are described, or how transactions are handled.

Each retailer, breaker, and marketplace often operates by their own rules.

For collectors and businesses alike, this creates a fragmented environment where expectations vary—and trust becomes harder to establish.

Why It Matters

Without clear and consistent standards:

- Collectors face uncertainty around product quality, fairness, and transparency

- Retailers operate without a level playing field, leading to inconsistent practices

- Breakers and marketplaces lack accountability benchmarks

- Bad actors can exploit gaps, damaging the reputation of the entire hobby

Over time, this erodes confidence—not just in individual sellers, but in the trading card industry as a whole.

Real-World Impact

- Inconsistent product allocation and distribution practices

- Varying definitions of “mint,” “near mint,” and other condition standards

- Lack of transparency in live breaks and pricing structures

- No agreed-upon best practices for customer protection

- Difficulty for new collectors to navigate the hobby safely

The result? A hobby that feels unpredictable instead of trustworthy.
