Issues Facing the Hobby

Distribution Fairness

Restoring Balance in the Trading Card Industry

The trading card industry has experienced extraordinary growth—but with that growth has come increasing strain on one of its most important foundations: fair and transparent product distribution.

For many retailers, collectors, and industry participants, access to product has become inconsistent, unpredictable, and at times inequitable.

The Certified Trading Card Association (CTCA) believes that a healthy hobby depends on a distribution system that is fair, transparent, and sustainable for all participants.

The Problem

In today’s market, distribution challenges have created real concerns across the industry:

Uneven Access to Product

Many local hobby shops—the backbone of the industry—struggle to secure consistent product allocations, while others receive disproportionate access.

Lack of Transparency

Allocation decisions are often unclear, leaving retailers uncertain about how product is distributed and why.

Market Distortion

When product is concentrated among a limited number of participants, it can lead to inflated pricing, artificial scarcity, and reduced consumer trust.

Retailer Disadvantage

Brick-and-mortar stores play a critical role in growing the hobby, yet many feel increasingly disadvantaged in the current distribution environment.

Why It Matters

Distribution fairness is not just a business issue—it is a trust issue.

When distribution is perceived as unfair:

• Retailers lose confidence

• Collectors face higher costs and reduced access

• New participants are discouraged from entering the hobby

• Long-term industry growth is put at risk

A strong and sustainable trading card ecosystem requires a level playing field where participants can compete and succeed based on service, community, and value—not access alone.

The CTCA’s Position

The CTCA advocates for a distribution model that is:

Fair

Access to product should be equitable and not disproportionately concentrated.

Transparent

Clear and understandable criteria should guide allocation decisions.

Accountable

Distribution practices should align with the long-term health of the hobby.

Sustainable

The system should support retailers, collectors, and industry partners alike.

How the CTCA Helps

The Certified Trading Card Association is working to improve distribution fairness through:

Industry Advocacy

Serving as a unified voice for retailers and industry professionals in conversations around distribution practices.

Standards Development

Establishing and promoting best practices that encourage fairness and transparency.

Industry Dialogue

Facilitating discussions between manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and marketplaces to address challenges collaboratively.

Member Representation

Ensuring that the concerns of CTCA members are heard and considered in shaping the future of the hobby.

Building a Better System

There is no single solution to distribution challenges—but there is a clear path forward:

• Increased transparency

• More consistent allocation frameworks

• Stronger communication across the supply chain

• Industry-wide commitment to fairness

The CTCA believes that by working together, the trading card industry can create a distribution system that supports growth, trust, and long-term success.

Be Part of the Solution

The future of the hobby depends on organizations and businesses that are willing to stand for fairness, integrity, and transparency.

Join the Certified Trading Card Association and help shape a stronger, more balanced trading card industry.
