Fraud and Counterfeits

Protecting the Integrity of the Hobby

The growth of the trading card industry has brought increased attention—and unfortunately, increased risk.

Fraud and counterfeit products are among the most serious threats facing the hobby today.

From fake cards and altered slabs to deceptive selling practices, these issues undermine trust, harm collectors, and damage legitimate businesses.

Without accountability and standards, bad actors thrive.

THE PROBLEM

Fraud in the hobby is not isolated—it is evolving.

Common issues include:

- Counterfeit Cards
Fake versions of high-value cards entering the market

- Altered Cards
Trimming, recoloring, or modifying cards to increase perceived value

- Slab Tampering
Repackaging or manipulating graded cards to misrepresent authenticity

- Misrepresentation
Sellers intentionally or negligently providing false information

- Scams & Deceptive Practices

Fake listings, non-delivery, or manipulated breaks

These issues erode confidence and create uncertainty for collectors and businesses alike.

THE IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY

Fraud and counterfeits don’t just affect individual transactions—they weaken the entire ecosystem.

- Collectors lose trust and confidence
- Legitimate businesses are forced to compete with dishonest actors
- Market values become distorted
- The reputation of the hobby suffers

Trust is the foundation of this industry—and fraud directly threatens it.
